Tips

Know something we should look into?

Many of the best questions about local government start with someone who saw a document, sat in a meeting or noticed something that did not add up. If you know about spending, contracts, records or rules at the City of Henderson, HEDCO, Henderson ISD, Rusk County or another public body, we want to hear from you.

What helps

Make the tip useful
  • Which body it involves. The city, HEDCO, a city board, Henderson ISD, Rusk County or another agency.
  • When it happened. A meeting date, a contract date or a time frame, with the year.
  • Where the record is. An agenda item, a budget page, a link or a document. Attach it if you have it.
  • How you know. Whether you saw it yourself or heard it from someone else.

How we handle tips

Our promise
  • Your identity stays private. We do not publish or share who sent a tip unless you ask us to.
  • We check before we publish. A tip is a starting point. We look for the public record behind it, and we do not publish anything based on a single unconfirmed source.
  • We may not reply to every tip. We read all of them, but some take time to check and some do not lead to a story.
  • Records, not rumors. We cover how public money and public rules are handled. We do not publish personal attacks or private matters.

Protecting yourself

Before you send
  • Use a personal device and account. If you work for a public body, do not send tips from a work computer, work phone or work email.
  • Consider a separate email address. A free account that does not use your name keeps your identity out of the message.
  • Many records are already public. If the information should be public, a records request may get it without anyone having to send it to us. See our Investigations page for how we use records requests.
